The Track Standard Comes First — Everything Else Second
We've seen a buyer order 300 LED track lights for a boutique chain. Beautiful fixtures. CRI 95. Perfect beam pattern in the spec sheet. They arrive. The adapter doesn't fit the track. The entire order is useless. The track in the stores is H-type 3-circuit. The fixtures have a 3-wire adapter. They're physically incompatible.
Track lighting isn't like downlights where a 600x600mm panel fits any standard grid. Each track system has a proprietary or semi-proprietary physical interface. Mix them up and you've bought 300 paperweights. Here's how to never make that mistake.

H-type is named for the adapter shape — the connector head looks like an "H" from the side. It's a 3-circuit track, meaning you can have three separately switched circuits on the same physical track. This is why department stores love it: circuit 1 = general lighting, circuit 2 = accent spots, circuit 3 = emergency. One track, three control zones.
3-wire single-circuit is simpler: one circuit only. All fixtures on the track turn on and off together. Cheaper track and cheaper fixtures. Fine for small shops. Limiting for anything above 100m².
Magnetic low-voltage track is the fastest-growing segment. The track carries 24V or 48V DC. Fixtures attach magnetically — no mechanical adapter. Repositioning takes seconds. The track profile is half the width of H-type. The catch: you need a remote driver (transformer) to convert mains to low voltage, and voltage drop limits track runs to about 5-8 meters on 24V systems (15-20m on 48V).

A 24° beam at 3 meters creates a pool of light about 1.3 meters wide. A 36° beam at the same distance covers 2 meters. This geometry determines whether one fixture lights a mannequin or three. Get it wrong and the client sees dark gaps or overlapping hotspots in their display — either way, they'll blame the lights.
CRI Is Everything in Retail — And R9 Is What Matters
We tested five track lights labeled "CRI>80" side by side in a clothing showroom. The red sweater under CRI 82 with R9=12 looked burgundy. Under CRI 93 with R9=72, it was clearly crimson. The difference is a returned item because "the color online didn't match."
Specify both Ra (general CRI) and R9 (deep red). CR 90+ with R9 ≥50 for fashion and home décor. CRI 95+ with R9 ≥90 for luxury retail and jewelry. These numbers add $5-12 per fixture. For a 200-fixture boutique, that's $1,000-2,400 — against the revenue from one additional sale per day because products look right under the lights.
Driver: Remote or Integral?
Integral-driver fixtures are self-contained. Clip on, done. The driver sits inside the fixture body, generating heat that shortens LED life and limits how compact the fixture can be. They're $15-30 cheaper per unit.
Remote-driver fixtures separate the electronics from the light head. The fixture is smaller, sleeker, and cooler-running. The driver box mounts above the ceiling or in an electrical compartment. If a driver fails — and eventually one will — you replace the box, not the fixture. In a 200-fixture installation, remote drivers save thousands in replacement labor over the system's lifespan.
For premium retail where the fixture itself is part of the visual design, remote-driver is the standard. For back-of-house, stockrooms, and budget retail, integral-driver works fine.
