The Dimming Protocol You Pick on Day 1 Determines Everything on Day 365
We've seen this play out across projects. A hotel specifies TRIAC-dimmable LED downlights because the electrical contractor is comfortable with phase-cut wiring. Six months in, guests complain about buzzing at 30% dimming. The engineering team discovers the minimum load on the TRIAC dimmers is 40W — but each downlight is 12W. Two fixtures per circuit. Total load: 24W. Below the dimmer's latching current. The lights pulse.
Every dimming protocol has a project it's built for. And every protocol has projects where it will fail. The trick is knowing which is which before the wiring is in the walls.

DALI-2: When You Need Every Fixture to Report Back
DALI-2 (IEC 62386) is the only protocol that supports bidirectional communication. The controller tells the driver to dim to 47%. The driver reports back: "I'm at 47%, my power draw is 18.3W, and I've accumulated 4,200 operating hours." This feedback loop is why buildings with energy certification targets (LEED, BREEAM, WELL) almost always spec DALI-2.
The protocol supports 64 addresses per bus, 16 groups, and 16 scenes. One DALI bus can control an entire floor of open-plan office fixtures. Each fixture can belong to multiple groups — so the same fixture participates in "daylight harvesting zone 3" and "after-hours cleaning scene." 0-10V can't do this. TRIAC can't come close.
The trade-off: DALI-2 needs a gateway/controller to bridge the bus to BACnet or KNX for BMS integration. That gateway costs $500-2,000. The bus wiring itself is cheap — 2-core, polarity-free, can share conduit with mains — but commissioning takes a trained technician. Budget 2-3 days for a 200-fixture floor.
0-10V: The Workhorse That Just Works
0-10V dimming uses two low-voltage control wires (purple and gray per ANSI C137.1). The control signal is analog: 10V = 100% brightness, 1V = 10% (or minimum), 0V = off (or minimum, depending on driver configuration).
It's dumb. It's reliable. And for 70% of commercial projects under 100 fixtures, it's the right call. A 0-10V dimmer switch costs $20-40. A DALI-2 gateway costs $500. The math is simple.
Where 0-10V fails: long wire runs. Control wires over 50 meters pick up EMI from adjacent mains wiring. The analog voltage drifts. Fixtures at the end of the run dim differently than fixtures near the controller. Use shielded twisted-pair (Belden 8471 or equivalent) for runs over 50m. At 100m+, switch to DALI-2 — digital signals don't drift.
TRIAC / Phase-Cut: The Retrofit Trap
TRIAC dimming works by chopping the AC waveform — either the leading edge (forward phase) or trailing edge (reverse phase). It was designed for incandescent bulbs in 1959. It persists because millions of buildings have phase-cut wiring in the walls and nobody wants to pull new cable.
Here's the trap: LED drivers need to "read" the chopped waveform and translate it into LED current. Cheap drivers do this badly. They buzz. They flicker below 20%. They need a minimum load of 20-40W to maintain the TRIAC's holding current — so a single 12W LED downlight on a 40W-minimum TRIAC dimmer never turns off properly. It glows dimly.
Specify TRIAC dimming only for retrofit projects where pulling new control wiring is impossible. For new construction, never. Use 0-10V or DALI-2. The $3-5 per fixture you save on TRIAC drivers will cost you $50-100 per fixture in callback visits.
PWM: When Color Temperature Must Not Shift
PWM dimming pulses the LED at full current, varying the duty cycle to control perceived brightness. The LED is always at its rated current during each pulse — so color temperature stays locked. Analog dimming (CCR — constant current reduction) shifts CCT by 200-400K as current drops. For a retail clothing display where 3000K fabric looks different from 3200K fabric, this shift matters. For a museum where artwork color accuracy is the entire point, it matters. For a standard office corridor, nobody can tell.
PWM frequency matters. Below 1kHz, the flicker is visible to the human eye. At 1-3kHz, it's imperceptible to most people but can cause headaches over 4+ hours of exposure. Above 3kHz, it's flicker-free per IEEE 1789. Specify PWM frequency ≥3kHz for occupied spaces. For camera environments (broadcast studios, video conferencing rooms), specify ≥25kHz to avoid rolling shutter artifacts on camera.
