Walk through any lighting trade show and every booth has 600x600mm LED panels. They all claim 120 lm/W, CRI>80, 50,000-hour lifespan. But install 200 of them in an office and the difference hits you within months. The $12 panels develop a yellow tint around the edges at year 2. Flicker makes staff complain of headaches. UGR is 25 — not 19 — so the glare from the grid ceiling is uncomfortable by hour 4.
The spec sheet doesn't tell you this. These problems are invisible until the panels are in the ceiling. Here are the six dimensions that separate commercial-grade from commodity.
1. Backlit vs. Edge-Lit: The Yellowing Time Bomb
Edge-lit panels route LED light through an acrylic light guide plate (LGP) that diffuses it across the panel surface. The problem: acrylic yellows under UV and heat exposure. At year 2-3, edge-lit panels develop a visible yellow ring around the perimeter where light travels longest through the LGP.
Backlit panels place LEDs directly behind the diffuser — no LGP. Light uniformity comes from LED spacing and diffuser optics, not a plastic sheet. The trade-off: backlit panels are 25-35mm thick vs. 8-10mm for edge-lit. They cost $3-8 more per panel. In a 200-panel office, that's $600-1,600 extra up front. Against a $6,000 replacement cost when the edge-lit panels yellow at year 3, the math is straightforward.
2. UGR: The Number That Defines Office Comfort
Unified Glare Rating. EN 12464-1 requires UGR <19 for office workstations. A panel claiming UGR <19 that actually delivers UGR 22-24 will cause eye strain, reduced productivity, and complaints. Staff won't know it's the lights — they'll just know they don't like being in the office.

3. Flicker: What Your Eyes Feel But Can't See
LED flicker at 100Hz isn't visible. But it triggers the nervous system. IEEE 1789 defines safe flicker thresholds: under 8% flicker percentage at 100Hz for low-risk. Above that, stroboscopic effects cause headaches, eye strain, and — in industrial settings — the dangerous illusion that rotating machinery appears stationary.
Flicker comes from the driver. Cheap drivers use simple rectification with large ripple current. Quality drivers use active PFC with <5% output ripple. The $2-4 difference in driver cost determines whether your panels are safe for 8-hour occupancy or should be limited to corridors.
4. CCT Consistency: The Checkerboard Ceiling
Two panels from the same order, same nominal 4000K. One looks slightly warm. One looks slightly cool. Install them side by side in a grid ceiling and the checkerboard pattern is visible from across the room. This is binning inconsistency.
LED manufacturing produces natural variation in color temperature. Quality suppliers bin to MacAdam 3-step — the human eye can't distinguish two MacAdam 3 panels. Budget suppliers bin to MacAdam 5 or don't bin at all. Specify "SDCM ≤3 (MacAdam 3-step ellipse)" in your RFQ and demand binning certificates with the shipment.
5. Driver: External vs. Integrated
Integrated drivers — built into the panel frame — save space and cost. They also make the panel disposable. When the driver fails (and it will, eventually), the entire panel goes to landfill.
External drivers — connected via quick-connect terminal — can be replaced in 30 seconds without removing the panel from the ceiling. For installations above 50 panels, external driver access saves thousands in maintenance labor over the panel's lifespan.
