12V or 120V: The First Fork
For almost everything residential and light commercial, 12V is the answer. Low-voltage is safer to bury, safer to work on, and the fixtures cost less. The tradeoff is voltage drop over long runs, and you solve that with heavier wire and a properly sized transformer, not by jumping to 120V.
120V earns its place on very long runs or high-wattage commercial floods where drop becomes hard to manage. For a typical garden, patio, or walkway, stick with 12V. It's the default for a reason.
Transformer Sizing: VA, Not Just Watts
Add up the total wattage of every fixture on the run, then multiply by 1.25 to 1.5. The margin covers future expansion and the inrush current LED drivers pull at startup. A transformer running at 100% of capacity runs hot and dies early.
If the total load is 60W, buy a 75W to 90W transformer. Going bigger is cheaper than a service call, and it leaves room to add a few path lights later. Undersize it once and you'll redo the whole job.
The Wire Gauge Math That Stops Voltage Drop
Voltage drop is why the last fixture on a long run glows dim while the first one glares. The fix is heavier wire, not more voltage. At 12V, keep the drop under about 1 volt by matching gauge to distance.

The thicker the copper, the less drop per foot, and the more even your light. If a run is pushing the limit, split it into two shorter home runs from the transformer instead of daisy-chaining everything on one wire.
IP Rating, Beam Angle, and the Brass Question
For in-ground fixtures, spec IP67 and a brass or marine-grade body. For surface path lights, IP65 is enough. Beam angle decides the look: a 10 to 25 degree spot punches up a tree trunk, a 60 to 90 degree flood washes a hedge. CRI 80 and up matters if the client cares how the plants look after dark, because low-CRI light makes greenery look grey.
Then the material call. Brass develops a patina but doesn't corrode through, and it takes a bump without cracking. Aluminum is lighter and cheaper and fine in dry climates, but it pits near salt or fertilizer. Plastic is the budget option for short-life installs and nothing more.
