A Provenance Checklist Before You Pay
Every test on the list above is a backstop for a sourcing decision. Get the sourcing decision right and you rarely need the tests.
- Demand lot traceability. A real date code, a real lot number, and a chain of custody back to the original manufacturer. No chain, no order.
- Buy authorized first. Authorized distribution costs a few percent more and removes the single biggest risk vector. The margin you save on a broker is meaningless next to a field failure.
- Verify the distributor, not just the part. Independent distributors should meet AS6081. Ask for the certification.
- Test incoming stock, not just paperwork. A small sample to X-ray or decapsulation when the part is expensive or safety-relevant is cheap insurance.
- Lock the spec sheet. If the approved part number changes because "an equivalent is available," that's the moment counterfeits enter. Equivalents get re-qualified, not swapped silently.
The counterfeit problem rewards one thing above all: discipline. Buy from traceable sources, verify the chain, and treat every "equivalent part" substitution as a re-qualification event. The buyers who get burned are the ones who let a distributor's word substitute for a paper trail.
